Why is Apples iPhone locked to a single carrier?

I’m really disappointed with some of Apples decisions lately.

Why is Apples iPhone locked to a single carrier? Why is there no real third party apps for it? And what’s up with ringtones, why should I need to pay one more time for a song just to play it when someone calls me? And don’t get me started on DRM.

Wil Shipley has some interesting opinions on this in his blog post iPhone & iPod: contain or disengage?.

The point of any company should be to make customers want to give it money, NOT to get money from customers. It’s a subtle distinction that is the difference between good and evil.

Spot on in my opinion.

I do hope this are exceptions and not the new rule for Apple.
